Codebreaks are crosswords without clues.
The puzzle looks like a standard crossword grid except that
each white square contains a number from 1 to 26. Each number represents a
letter and every letter is used in each puzzle.
Also on the page is the reference grid (insert your found letters
here to ensure that you don't assign the same letter to two different numbers).

|
To provide just a little help one letter is provided in the grid.
Let's suppose the letter provided is C and it appears in a square
numbered 5. The first thing to do is to insert C into every square containing
the number 5.

From here on solving becomes a matter of skill
and knowledge of the language and make-up of words.
We know that most words contain at least one
vowel and that some letters are used a lot more than others (E is probably the
most used letter but Z and X appear much less frequently).
Other things we know about words include the
fact that Q is most often followed by U, K is often precede by C, and some word
endings appear more than others (e.g. ION - just think of how many words you
know with that ending). |

|
So, be confident in your knowledge and start off by having a
close look at the puzzle grid.
Some solvers look first for words containing double letters, or
words where the same letter appears several times. Others look at the frequency
of letters - mainly in order to find the E (or the Q or X).
Perhaps you will develop your own system to solve the puzzle -
we'd be interested to hear about your preferred system.

With a little luck you should soon be on your
way to completing the puzzle - a very satisfying experience. However, newcomers
may find it easier to start off with more than one letter so our magazines
provide two extra letters per puzzle, (located at the back of the book), if
required. |
